Faith Kipyegon, Beatrice Chebet Set for 5,000m Showdown at World Championships

Posted : 18 September 2025

Kenya’s Faith Kipyegon and Beatrice Chebet, fresh from their world title victories in the 1,500m and 10,000m respectively, are preparing to face each other in the 5,000m final at the World Championships in Tokyo.

Both athletes successfully navigated their heats at the National Stadium on Thursday, setting the stage for their first direct clash since the Paris Olympics. The final is scheduled for Saturday, and the pair will compete for the opportunity to secure a rare championship double.

Kipyegon, who set a world record in the 1,500m earlier this season in Eugene, expressed confidence in her preparation for the 5,000m. “I had my season best, and this was my first 5,000m race of the season, so I’m pleased. I have recovered well from the 1,500m win and am looking forward to Saturday,” she said.

Chebet, the double Olympic champion, became the first woman to run 5,000m under 14 minutes with her world record of 13:58.06 at the Diamond League meet in Eugene. Having previously won silver and bronze at world championships, Chebet aims to complete her collection of global medals while challenging her idol and defending champion, Kipyegon.

Both athletes will have support from fellow Kenyan Agnes Ngetich, the third-fastest woman in history over 5,000m. Ethiopia’s Gudaf Tsegay, who won bronze in the 10,000m in Tokyo and holds the 2022 world 5,000m title, will also contest the final, seeking redemption after missing a medal in Paris.

Tsegay emphasized the strength and openness of the field, stating, “It’s possible to break the 1,500m record once, three, or five times – it’s fantastic. The field is really strong, and I will discuss tactics with my coach to decide whether to race strategically or at a fast pace.”
