Faith Kipyegon Set to Attempt First Unofficial Sub-Four Minute Mile in Paris

Posted : 26 June 2025

Faith Kipyegon, Kenya’s celebrated middle-distance star, is gearing up for a groundbreaking feat on Thursday in Paris. The three-time Olympic and world 1,500-meter champion will try to become the first woman to unofficially run a mile in under four minutes.

This ambitious attempt, modeled after Eliud Kipchoge’s historic sub-two-hour marathon, is part of Nike’s “Breaking4” initiative and will take place at Stade Charléty—where Kipyegon previously set world records in both the 1,500m and 5,000m events.

The weather forecast appears favorable, setting the stage for a performance that could redefine the limits of women’s distance running. Equipped with Nike’s latest innovation in racing gear, including ultra-light 85-gram super-spikes, Kipyegon will also benefit from strategically positioned pacers designed to create aerodynamic advantage.

Inspired by Kipchoge’s arrow-shaped pacing formation, this support system is tailored to help her maintain the consistent speed necessary to shave over seven seconds off her own current mile best of 4:07.64 set in 2023.

Kipyegon’s remarkable connection with the Stade Charléty, where she’s already etched her name in the record books, fuels her confidence for the attempt. “There’s special energy at this track,” she said, reflecting on her previous triumphs in the stadium. To achieve the sub-four mile, she will need to run each lap nearly two seconds faster than ever before—an immense challenge even for one of the sport’s greatest.

With six global titles to her name and a comeback that saw her dominate after maternity leave, Kipyegon’s career has already broken barriers. This attempt is not just a personal milestone but a symbolic push forward in women's athletics. If successful, it will place her alongside legends like Roger Bannister and Diane Leather, who shattered time barriers in their era and changed the face of distance running forever.
