The 2025 edition of the Eugene Diamond League, also known as the Prefontaine Classic, is shaping up to be one of the most star-studded athletics meetings in recent history. Scheduled for Saturday, July 5 at the iconic Hayward Field, the meet will feature a stunning lineup of talent, including 17 individual gold medalists from the Paris Olympics and 14 current world record holders, promising an unforgettable day of elite competition.
Organizers have confirmed that the field will also include nearly 100 Olympic and Paralympic medalists, with at least five full Olympic podium rematches set to take place, making this year’s event a de facto encore to the 2024 Paris Games.
Among the headline acts, Armand “Mondo” Duplantis returns to his record-breaking hunting ground in the pole vault, aiming to build on his already remarkable achievements at Hayward Field. In the women's distance races, Faith Kipyegon and Beatrice Chebet are set to renew their dominance, with Chebet looking to add another fast time following her recent 10,000m world record on the same track.
The sprint events are expected to deliver fireworks, particularly in the women’s 100 meters, where Paris medalists Julien Alfred, Sha’Carri Richardson, and Melissa Jefferson-Wooden will go head-to-head once again in a blockbuster rematch.
In the 400m hurdles, the showdown between Olympic champion Rai Benjamin, world champion Karsten Warholm, and Brazil’s Alison dos Santos promises to be one of the most anticipated events of the meet.
American star Sydney McLaughlin-Levrone will step away from her trademark 400m hurdles to contest the flat 400 meters in a non-Diamond League race, adding further intrigue to an already packed program.
The men’s 200m features a much-anticipated clash between Kenny Bednarek and Letsile Tebogo, rekindling their rivalry from last year’s Diamond League final. Meanwhile, the iconic Bowerman Mile will showcase American distance talents Cole Hocker and Yared Nuguse against a deep international field.
This year’s meet also marks the 50th anniversary of the Prefontaine Classic, a fitting backdrop for an event that is expected to produce world-class performances and possibly more world records.
With Olympic champions, world record holders, and national pride all on the line, the 2025 Eugene Diamond League is poised to be one of the most memorable track and field events of the season.
