Nigerian wrestlers Esther Kolawole and Christinah Ogunsanya claimed bronze medals at the ongoing U-23 World Wrestling Championships in Serbia, delivering a strong start under the leadership of newly elected Nigeria Wrestling Federation (NWF) President, Bashir Adewale Adeniyi, MFR, PhD. The medals have been widely celebrated as a fitting inauguration gift for the new NWF chief.
Adeniyi, the Comptroller General of the Nigeria Customs Service, was formally inaugurated as NWF President on Saturday evening by the National Sports Commission. Meanwhile, Kolawole and Ogunsanya were showcasing their talent on the mat, much to the delight of the federation.
In the 62kg category, Kolawole defeated Hungary’s Yasmine Soliman 10-0 before falling to Iryna Bondar of Ukraine. Demonstrating remarkable resilience, she triumphed in the repechage round over India’s Savita Savita with a 16-4 victory and then secured the bronze medal by defeating Venezuela’s Astrid Paolo Montero 8-1.
In the 53kg category, Ogunsanya opened her campaign by overpowering UWW’s Ekaterina Kapushkina 10-0, followed by a convincing win over Canada’s Serena Rosa Di Benedcgo to reach the quarter-finals. She then edged out Suiyi Chen of China 10-6 to qualify for the semifinals but narrowly lost 3-5 to Japan’s Haruna Marikawa. Ogunsanya’s determination shone in the bronze medal match, where she dominated Brianna Elizabeth Gonzalez of the USA 8-0.
Reacting to the performances, President Bashir Adewale Adeniyi praised the duo for their exceptional display. He described the achievement as a perfect start to his tenure, expressing confidence in future tournament preparations.
“I want to salute our gallant wrestlers for this feat. This is a perfect way to begin our journey. We are a winning federation, and it has started,” Adeniyi said. He further noted, “For future tournaments, our preparations will be better. We will scrutinize our previous performances with more hard work, determination, and planning to do even better.”
