The management of the Edo State Sports Commission on Wednesday announced that it has shelved its plans to organize the 4th Edo Sports Festival.
The ESSC said the announcement followed the significant impact of the recently concluded maiden Niger Delta Sports Festival in Uyo on the athletes, as well as the fast-approaching National Sports Festival scheduled to hold in Ogun in May.
The decision was taken during the Commission's management meeting, presided over by the Executive Chairman, Hon. Amadin Desmond Enabulele, on Monday, April 22, 2025, at the Samuel Ogbemudia Stadium.
Rising from the management meeting attended by the four Executive Directors, the Permanent Secretary, and other directors, the Executive Chairman of the Edo State Sports Commission, Desmond Enabulele, disclosed that the postponement of this year's state sports festival became necessary after considering the impact of the Niger Delta Games on the athletes’ preparations for the National Sports Festival.
He added that the management also considered the short interval between the scheduled period of the Edo Sports Festival and the commencement date of the Ogun Games, especially since Edo athletes for the National Sports Festival are expected to be in camp between now and the weekend.
According to the Edo State Sports Commission boss, the Commission's current focus is on the final preparations of the state contingent for the Ogun Games.
He explained that the Edo State Sports Festival is designed to serve as a platform for young athletes to rehearse and for the discovery of new talents who would represent the state at future National Sports Festivals.
The 2025 Edo State Sports Festival, earlier scheduled to hold from April 21 to May 1, 2025, was aimed at helping prepare Edo athletes for the forthcoming National Sports Festival, slated for May 16 to 30, 2025, in Abeokuta, Ogun State.
Enabulele, who expressed optimism that many promising talents would be discovered and nurtured through the Edo State Sports Festival to reinforce the state's sports contingent for the Ogun Games, assured that his management team will ensure that the 2026 edition of the Edo State Sports Festival is planned well in advance to avoid scheduling conflicts.
