Eseme Targets World Sprint Success After Commonwealth Games Gold

Cameroon's Emmanuel Eseme says winning the men's 100 metres gold medal at the 2026 Commonwealth Games has strengthened his ambition to compete consistently with the world's best sprinters.

The reigning African champion delivered a memorable performance in Glasgow, claiming the Commonwealth title in record-breaking fashion. The 32-year-old set a new Commonwealth Games record while also establishing a new Cameroonian national record, adding another major achievement to his growing list of honours.

Despite his recent success, Eseme insists his greatest strength is not his ranking or personal best but the confidence he carries into every race. He believes that mindset has been the foundation of his rise on the international stage.

"I never go into a race thinking someone else is going to win. I always approach every competition with the mindset of a winner. That's what's really helping me on the biggest stages," Eseme said.

The Cameroonian star explained that he is often not the fastest athlete on paper before major races. However, he believes his ability to execute races under pressure allows him to challenge the world's elite sprinters consistently.

"At most of the meets I compete in, I'm never the fastest on paper. But I always know that if anyone wants to beat me, they have to run really fast.

"Even in the Diamond League, I'm often not the fastest on paper, but I'm usually among the top three or four because I believe in myself and execute my race."

Eseme's victory in Glasgow completed an impressive continental treble, having previously won gold medals at the African Championships, African Games, and now the Commonwealth Games. The achievement further establishes him as one of Africa's leading sprinters.

Beyond medals, the Commonwealth champion says he wants to inspire a new generation of athletes across Cameroon and the African continent. He hopes his performances will encourage young people to believe they can compete with the traditional sprint powerhouses.

"I set my objectives very high. I want Cameroonians, and not just Cameroonians but Africans, to believe that we are capable of achieving great things," he said.

Through his foundation, Eseme continues to mentor young athletes and encourage them to dream without limits.

"I always tell them that if the Americans, Jamaicans and Nigerians can achieve greatness, then we can do the same."

Eseme believes his recent achievements have increased interest in athletics in Cameroon. While he is proud of his Commonwealth triumph, he views it as another step in his journey rather than the peak of his career as he continues chasing success on the global stage.
