Ese Brume Wins Gold in San Diego While Brother Godson Receives Federal Prison Sentence

Posted : 02 July 2026

Nigerian athletics experienced a weekend of contrasting fortunes in the United States. Elite long jumper Ese Brume achieved a significant victory on the track. Meanwhile, her younger brother, sprinter Godson Brume, faced severe legal penalties in a Louisiana federal court.

Ese Brume secured the gold medal at the 2026 USATF San Diego/Imperial Open and Masters Championships held in Chula Vista. The reigning Commonwealth champion recorded a season-best mark of 6.59 meters. This performance improved upon her previous wind-aided effort of 6.53 meters achieved at the LA Grand Prix. The African record holder defeated American athlete Nicole Warwick to claim the top spot on the podium. This victory provides positive momentum for the two-time World Championships medalist as she prepares for the upcoming 2026 Commonwealth Games in Glasgow, Scotland.

In contrast, her 23-year-old brother Godson Brume was sentenced to 27 months in federal prison by U.S. Chief Judge Shelly D. Dick. The punishment stems from his unlawful possession of a firearm while residing in the United States under a non-immigrant student visa. The U.S. Attorney’s Office for the Middle District of Louisiana confirmed that the former Louisiana State University sprinter will also face deportation to Nigeria after serving his prison term.

The federal charges originated from a domestic dispute outside his Baton Rouge apartment. Court documents state that Godson Brume became involved in an argument with his former girlfriend. During the altercation, he discharged a 9mm pistol in the presence of his infant child. Arriving sheriff's deputies detained the athlete after he attempted to discard the weapon in nearby bushes. He later confessed to investigators that he fired the weapon in an attempt to frighten the woman away.

United States Attorney Kurt L. Wall stated that the sentence demonstrates a commitment to enforcing federal firearm regulations and protecting local communities from violent incidents. He noted that legal accountability applies equally to all individuals regardless of personal or athletic status. The conviction represents a sharp decline for the young sprinter. He had previously run a lifetime best of 9.90 seconds in the 100-meter dash and was considered a top prospect for the national athletics team.
