Ese Brume and Chidi Okezie Set for High-Stakes Action at Kip Keino Classic

Posted : 23 April 2026

Nigeria’s premier long jumper Ese Brume and 400m specialist Chidi Okezie are ready to compete against global icons today. The Nyayo National Stadium in Nairobi serves as the venue for the prestigious Kip Keino Classic. This event is part of the World Athletics Continental Tour Gold series. It attracts elite talent by offering significant ranking points and financial rewards.

Ese Brume makes her highly anticipated season debut in the long jump today. Her only previous appearance this year was a 100m sprint in Texas earlier this month. She finished that race in 12.11s but now returns to her signature discipline. Brume faces a tough lineup including American Tionna Tobias and Marthe Koala from Burkina Faso.

Fellow Nigerian athlete Ruth Usoro is also scheduled to compete in the long jump event. Usoro enters the competition with a season’s best mark of 6.65m so far. She aims to challenge the leaders and improve her standing on the global stage. The field is exceptionally deep with multiple athletes holding personal bests near the seven-meter mark.

Chidi Okezie is preparing for his fifth competitive outing of the current athletics season. He recently secured a third-place finish in the 200m at the Addis Ababa Grand Prix. In Nairobi, he returns to his preferred 400m race against world-class opposition. His rivals include Olympic bronze medalist Muzala Samukonga and South African star Zakithi Nene.

The meet also features international superstars like American sprinter Gabby Thomas. Thomas is registered for both the 100m and 200m sprints after a successful showing in Ethiopia. Local favorite Ferdinand Omanyala will also headline the men’s sprints before his home crowd. He remains Africa’s fastest man and hopes to break the 10-second barrier once again.

Organizers have introduced several upgrades to ensure fast times during this year's edition. The stadium now features a brand-new track and advanced wavelight pacing technology. Furthermore, the schedule has shifted to an evening format to provide better conditions. These changes are expected to help athletes deliver record-breaking performances under the Kenyan lights.
