Enugu Targets World-Class Spectacle as Countdown Begins for 2nd City International Marathon

Posted : 03 July 2026

The countdown has begun for the second edition of the Enugu City International Marathon, with the Enugu State Government and Nilayo Sports Management Limited intensifying preparations to deliver a world-class road race on Saturday, August 29, 2026.

Branded with the theme "Tomorrow Runs Here," this year's marathon is aimed at promoting youth empowerment, discovering emerging athletics talent, encouraging healthy lifestyles, and showcasing Enugu as a premier destination for international sporting events and economic opportunities.

The event is expected to attract elite and amateur runners from across Nigeria and beyond, with participants anticipated from cities including Owerri, Warri, Onitsha, Asaba, Abakaliki, Awka and several other locations, turning the South-East into a vibrant celebration of athletics.

Organisers said the marathon will continue to serve as a platform for identifying and developing indigenous long-distance runners while also attracting top athletes from Africa and the global athletics community.

To enhance the race experience, the marathon route has been designed to showcase Enugu's rich cultural heritage, modern infrastructure and scenic landscape, offering both competitors and spectators an unforgettable experience.

Registration for the 2026 edition commenced on June 15, with organisers confirming that the prize money remains unchanged from the inaugural race.

The popular 10km race will retain its existing route, while the revised 42km marathon course and community fitness run routes will be unveiled in the coming weeks.

Additional information regarding the race routes, elite athlete participation and other side events will be released through the marathon's official communication channels ahead of the competition.

The organisers credited the commitment of Enugu State Governor, Peter Ndubuisi Mbah, whose investment in sports development has continued to strengthen youth engagement, talent discovery and the state's ambition of becoming a major hub for international sporting events.

With technical support from Nilayo Sports Management Limited, the organisers expressed confidence that the 2026 Enugu City International Marathon will rank among Africa's leading road races and further elevate Nigeria's profile on the global athletics stage.

The second edition of the Enugu City International Marathon is expected to build on the success of its inaugural event by combining elite competition with community participation. As preparations continue, organisers remain focused on delivering an event that promotes athletics, tourism and youth development.
