Enugu is set for another major athletics spectacle as the second edition of the Enugu City International Marathon takes centre stage on August 29, with athletes from Nigeria, across Africa and the diaspora expected to converge on the Coal City.
The event, organised by Nilayo Sports Management in partnership with the Enugu State Government, is expected to combine elite road racing with opportunities to promote tourism, business and youth development across the South-East.
Organisers said key aspects of the race, including route certification, medical services, water stations, security and traffic control, have been concluded ahead of the event.
Hotels, transport operators and businesses across the state are also experiencing increased activity as participants and visitors prepare to arrive for the marathon.
The Chief Executive Officer of Nilayo Sports Management, Mrs Yetunde Olopade, expressed satisfaction with the response from athletes, saying registration has surpassed expectations.
“I am really impressed with the registration turnout. Both local and international athletes, including elite athletes, have been trooping out to register for this marathon, and I must say I am impressed,” Olopade said.
She urged emerging athletes from the South-East and South-South regions to take advantage of the competition, noting that registration remains open.
“I still want to use this medium to call on young and talented athletes from the South-South and South-East regions to go out and register, as registration is still ongoing,” she added.
The 42km elite marathon will begin at 6:30 a.m. from ShopRite on Abakaliki Road, taking runners through some of Enugu’s notable landmarks before reaching the finish line.
The 10km Fun Run will commence at 8:30 a.m. from Chris Tee Petrol Station on CIC Road and conclude at Opara Square by 12:30 p.m.
Attractive cash prizes await the leading male and female finishers in the elite categories.
With preparations entering their final stage, organisers believe the marathon can establish itself as a major annual sporting event capable of attracting visitors, stimulating economic activity and providing a platform for young athletes to showcase their talent.
