Enugu City Marathon: Organisers Target Talent Discovery, Economic Growth

The 2nd edition of the Enugu City International Marathon is attracting increasing interest from elite, local and international athletes ahead of the Aug. 29 race, with organisers positioning the event as a major platform for talent discovery and economic development.

The marathon, organised by Nilayo Sports Management in partnership with the Enugu State Government, is expected to bring together runners from Nigeria and other countries for a competitive road race through some of the city’s major landmarks.

Mrs. Yetunde Olopade, Chief Executive Officer of Nilayo Sports Management, expressed satisfaction with the growing number of athletes registering for the event.

“I am really impressed with the registration turnout. Both local and international athletes and elite athletes have been trooping out to register for this Marathon and I must say I am impressed,” Olopade said.

She said the response from athletes was an indication of the growing confidence in the Enugu City Marathon and its potential to provide Nigerian runners with an opportunity to compete at a high level on home soil.

Olopade also encouraged young athletes, particularly those from the South-East and South-South regions, to take advantage of the ongoing registration.

“I still want to use this medium to call on young and talented athletes from the South-South and South-East region to go out and register as registration is still ongoing,” she said.

According to her, increased participation by young runners would help the organisers identify emerging talents while providing them with an avenue to test themselves against established athletes.

The 42km elite race is scheduled to begin at 6:30 a.m. from ShopRite on Abakaliki Road, with the route passing through key areas of Enugu.

The 10km Fun Run will commence at 8:30 a.m. from Chris Tee Petrol Station on CIC Road and finish at Opara Square by 12:30 p.m.

Organisers said preparations for the event have reached an advanced stage, with logistics, security, medical services and hospitality arrangements for elite athletes being put in place.

Registration for interested athletes remains open through the official event platform.

With growing participation and preparations gathering pace, the Enugu City International Marathon is expected to further strengthen the city’s profile as a destination for major sporting events while creating opportunities for tourism, youth engagement and economic activity.
