Enugu is set to take centre stage in the athletics world as the 2nd Enugu City International Marathon enters its final days, with officials of the Athletics Federation of Nigeria (AFN) and World Athletics expected in the Coal City ahead of the August 29 race.
The marathon, organised by Nilayo Sports Management in partnership with the Enugu State Government, has attracted significant interest from the athletics community, reinforcing the city's growing reputation as a destination for major road-running events.
Representatives of the AFN and World Athletics are expected to monitor preparations, inspect key race facilities, interact with elite athletes and engage organisers and other stakeholders ahead of the competition.
Their presence is expected to add further international credibility to the event and strengthen Enugu's prospects of hosting more world-class athletics competitions in the future.
More than 3,000 participants have already registered for the 42km elite marathon and 10km fun run, with the field expected to feature Olympians, continental champions, emerging athletes and recreational runners.
Meanwhile, preparations for the Marathon Expo are at an advanced stage. The expo will provide runners with an official kit collection point while also featuring sponsor activations, wellness displays and other fan-engagement activities before race day.
The build-up will include the Enugu City International Marathon World Press Conference scheduled for August 28, where organisers, government representatives, sponsors and selected athletes are expected to provide updates on final arrangements, security measures and the prize purse.
On race day, the 42km elite marathon will flag off at 6:30 a.m. from ShopRite on Abakaliki Road, while the 10km Fun Run will commence at 8:30 a.m. from Chris Tee Petrol Station on CIC Road, with the finish point at Opara Square.
Organisers said security, medical, hydration and traffic management arrangements have been finalised to ensure the safety and comfort of participants and spectators.
With preparations reaching their climax, Enugu is poised for a major sporting celebration that will combine elite athletics with entertainment, culture and commerce, further enhancing the city's profile as an emerging sports and tourism hub in West Africa.
