Tokyo 2020 Olympics finalist Enoch Adegoke has expressed his excitement after achieving a new season's best at the MTN CHAMPS Season 4 grand finale. The sprinter claimed the men's 100m title in Ibadan by clocking an impressive 10.15s. This victory marks a significant milestone in his journey back to the elite level of global athletics.
The final race was a highly competitive affair that came down to a dramatic finish. Adegoke narrowly defeated Chidera Ezeakor, who is the reigning National Sports Festival champion. Both athletes crossed the finish line almost at the same time in a dash that thrilled the spectators.
This performance represents Adegoke's fastest competitive time in nearly five years. His previous career highlight was a 9.98s run during the Olympic semi-finals in 2021. Since sustaining an injury in the Olympic final, the 26-year-old athlete has faced a difficult road to full recovery.
Adegoke noted that he had been consistently stuck around the 10.30s mark in recent seasons. He stated that his goal was to consistently run between 10.00s and 10.10s to regain his world-class status. The sprinter credited his coach for keeping him focused on proper execution during the heats and semi-finals.
The athlete acknowledged that the pressure from Ezeakor was a major factor in his improved time. He mentioned that the high level of competition in the final pushed him to perform better. Adegoke is a former world U-20 champion and holds two national titles in Nigeria.
The win in Ibadan reinforces his position as one of the country's premier sprinters. It also provides a massive boost of confidence as he looks toward upcoming international competitions. His return to sub-10.20s territory suggests he is finally overcoming the physical setbacks that hampered his career after Tokyo.
