Enekwechi Leads Nigeria's Charge into Shot Put Final as Sprinters Advance

Posted : 30 July 2026

Nigeria's campaign in the athletics competition at the 2026 Commonwealth Games gathered further momentum on Wednesday as Chukwuebuka Enekwechi qualified for the men's shot put final, while Jennifer Obi Chukwuka, Olayinka Olajide, and Favour Onwuzurike all advanced to the 200m semi-finals.

Enekwechi produced a composed display in the men's shot put qualifying round, throwing 20.03 metres to top Group B and secure automatic qualification for the final.

The Nigerian finished ahead of India's Samardeep Singh Gill (19.95m), New Zealand's Nick Palmer (19.92m), South Africa's Aiden Smith (19.86m), and Mauritius' Bernard Baptiste (15.00m).

Overall qualifying honours, however, went to New Zealand's Tom Walsh, whose 21.03m effort topped Group A, while India's Tajinderpal Singh Toor (20.14m) and England's Scott Lincoln (20.09m) also progressed automatically to the final.

On the track, Jennifer Obi Chukwuka underlined her growing potential by winning Heat 4 of the women's 200m in a personal best of 23.26 seconds to qualify automatically for the semi-finals.

Canada's Marie-Eloise Leclair followed in second with 23.50 seconds, while The Gambia's Nyimansata Jawneh claimed the third automatic qualification spot in 23.74 seconds.

Nigeria strengthened its presence in the women's event when Olayinka Olajide secured qualification from Heat 5 after placing third in 23.62 seconds.

Jamaica's Lavanya Williams won the race in 22.91 seconds, while Singapore's Veronica Shanti Pereira finished second in a season's best of 23.00 seconds.

In the men's 200m, Favour Onwuzurike also kept Nigeria's sprint ambitions alive after clocking 20.31 seconds to earn automatic qualification for the semi-finals.

The trio's progress gives Nigeria multiple opportunities to challenge for places in the 200m finals, while Enekwechi will be aiming to convert his impressive qualifying performance into a podium finish in the men's shot put final. Their performances also strengthened Team Nigeria's hopes of adding more medals as the athletics programme continues in Glasgow.
