Eilish McColgan Aims for Paula Radcliffe's Marathon Record

Posted : 13 February 2025

Eilish McColgan has set her sights on breaking Paula Radcliffe's long-standing British marathon record but acknowledges that this goal won't be achieved on her debut. The reigning Commonwealth Games 10,000m champion will compete in her first-ever marathon at the London Marathon in April, two years after she had originally hoped to take part. However, injury setbacks prevented her from running in 2023, and McColgan believes that rushing her marathon preparation contributed to those injuries, ultimately sidelining her for nearly six months.

The 34-year-old athlete admits that breaking Radcliffe's record of two hours, 15 minutes, and 25 seconds on her first attempt is unrealistic. "It just isn't going to happen," McColgan said. While she remains confident in her future potential, she is approaching her marathon journey as a long-term project. She intends to take things month by month, focusing on gradual improvement rather than rushing her progress.

Before her injury, McColgan was in the best shape of her career, having recently broken Radcliffe's 21-year-old British 10,000m record and improved her personal best in the half marathon in Berlin. After undergoing knee surgery, she shifted her focus to road racing but still keeps an eye on the upcoming 2026 Commonwealth Games in Glasgow, even though there will be no road events. Her long-term goals include excelling in the marathon while continuing to improve over shorter distances.

Reflecting on 2023, McColgan emphasizes the lessons she learned from her setbacks and the importance of taking a measured approach to her training. She is committed to building her career with longevity in mind and believes that she can still reach her best form in the upcoming Olympic cycle. While the marathon is a future project, McColgan is determined to learn and grow through the process, hoping to eventually close the gap toward elite marathon times.
