2nd Niger Delta Games: Edo Launch Athlete Trials as Coach Confident of Medal Haul

Posted : 16 January 2026

Ahead of the 2nd Niger Delta Games, scheduled to hold in Benin City, Edo State, from February 20 to 27, Team Edo has commenced athlete trials, marking the beginning of their final preparations for the competition.

The athletics association led the trials, with athletes and coaches taking to the track and field in the early hours to put their skills to the test.

The athletes participated in events including the 100m, 200m, and 400m races, as well as long jump, triple jump, high jump, javelin, discus, and hammer throw.

Both emerging talents and established competitors expressed determination to win gold for Edo State. Among the athletes preparing for the games were Emmanuel Shakamomodu (javelin), Ibrahim Haamidu (long jump), and Jennifer Osemwengie (female long jump).

Coaches and athletes alike praised the organisers and sponsors of the Niger Delta Games—Dunamis Icons Ltd and the Niger Delta Development Commission (NDDC)—as a strong source of motivation. The athletes said they eagerly anticipate the excitement of the games in February.

The head coach of the Edo State Athletics Association, Thadeus Omodiale, expressed confidence in the team’s readiness. “We are ninety percent ready for the Niger Delta Games. We started trials today, and it went very well. We already have a good understanding of which athletes can deliver. The trials are necessary to finalise selections, and full training begins on Monday as part of our final preparations,” he said.

Director of Sports Development and Operations, Pastor Osayomore Aghahowa, also confirmed that Edo State is ready for the games. “With athlete registration concluded, the trials have begun, and we plan to continue next week,” he added, highlighting the state’s commitment to performing strongly at the event.
