Dawit Seare Edges Jakob Ingebrigtsen to Win World 5km Gold in Copenhagen

Posted : 20 September 2026

Dawit Seare produced a dramatic late surge to defeat Jakob Ingebrigtsen and win the men's 5km title at the World Athletics Road Running Championships in Copenhagen. The Eritrean crossed the line in 12:56 to set a national record, while Ingebrigtsen finished three seconds later in a Norwegian record of 12:59.

Seare entered the race as the reigning African 5,000m champion and maintained contact with the leading group through the early stages. Ingebrigtsen, competing on his 26th birthday, stayed patient before gradually moving through the field as the race approached its final kilometre.

The Norwegian Olympic 5,000m champion eventually moved into the lead with around 30 seconds remaining. For a moment, Ingebrigtsen appeared to have timed his attack perfectly after making his move from the chasing group.

Seare responded immediately. The Eritrean found another burst of speed in the closing metres, caught Ingebrigtsen and pulled clear before the finish to secure his first World Road Running Championships title.

Ingebrigtsen's silver medal continued an impressive return from an injury-hit season. He had won the 5,000m at the Ultimate Championship in Budapest eight days earlier and was competing in only his sixth race of the season, making the Copenhagen event his third consecutive weekend of major championship competition.

Saymon Amanuel completed an historic day for Eritrea by taking bronze in 13:00. The 19-year-old also recorded a personal best, giving Eritrea two places on the men's 5km podium.

Australia's Ky Robinson finished fourth in 13:04, matching Uganda's Keneth Kiprop, who also recorded 13:04 in fifth. Ethiopia's Addisu Yihune was sixth in 13:07, followed by compatriot Mezgebu Sime in 13:08.

The women's 5km title went to Ethiopia's Likina Amebaw, who won in 14:41. Caroline Gitonga of Kenya finished second in 14:48, while Australia's Rose Davies took bronze.

Robert Farken of Germany also claimed a major title in Copenhagen, winning the men's mile in 3:51.80 after overtaking American Yared Nuguse in the final 100 metres. France's Agathe Guillemot won the women's mile in 4:22.74, while the half-marathon titles are scheduled to be decided on Sunday.
