Brazilian marathoner Daniel Do Nascimento has been handed a five-year suspension following two positive tests for banned substances, according to a statement from the Athletics Integrity Unit (AIU) on Wednesday. The athlete, who rose to prominence for his exceptional endurance performances, tested positive for multiple anabolic steroids, including rostanolone, metenolone, and nandrolone.
The suspension is retroactively effective from July 15, 2024, and all competitive results from July 4 onward have been annulled. The AIU cited the July 4 test as the initial violation that led to the ban, highlighting the presence of performance-enhancing substances that are strictly prohibited under anti-doping regulations.
Do Nascimento made headlines in 2022 when he broke the marathon area record for the Americas by clocking a time of 2 hours, 4 minutes, and 51 seconds at the Seoul Marathon. His ban now casts a shadow over his athletic achievements and removes him from elite competition until mid-2029.
