Cyrena Samba-Mayela Ruled Out of European Championships Through Injury

France's Olympic 100m hurdles silver medallist Cyrena Samba-Mayela has withdrawn from next month's European Athletics Championships in Birmingham, ending her hopes of defending the title she won in Rome two years ago. The 25-year-old announced on Monday that ongoing physical problems have made it impossible for her to prepare to the standard required for the continental event.

Samba-Mayela revealed that she has been dealing with persistent pain for several weeks, which had already prevented her from competing at her best during the French Championships. After consulting with her medical team, coaches and the French athletics federation, she concluded that missing the championships was the most sensible decision for her long-term recovery.

The French record holder, whose national best of 12.31 seconds was set during her European Championship victory in 2024, enjoyed a promising return to competition this season after an injury-hit 2025. She clocked an impressive 12.50 seconds in Texas in June but was later forced to withdraw from the Paris Diamond League meeting because of the same physical issues.

Samba-Mayela said she did not believe she could recover in time to compete at the level expected of a defending champion. She added that following medical advice was the right course of action, even though she had been eager to represent France in Birmingham.

The withdrawal is another setback for the talented hurdler, who claimed European gold in Rome before winning Olympic silver at the Paris Games in 2024. After spending much of 2025 sidelined with a calf injury, she had hoped this season would mark a full return to top form, but her latest fitness problems have delayed that comeback.
