Countdown to 3rd African U18/U20 Athletics Championships as Top Brands Join Sponsorship Race

Posted : 25 June 2025

Exactly three weeks before Africa’s brightest young athletes converge in Nigeria, preparations are in top gear for the 3rd African U18/U20 Athletics Championships, scheduled to take place from July 16–20, 2025, in Abeokuta, Ogun State.

As anticipation builds, major players in the corporate sector, Federal Inland Revenue Service (FIRS), Bank of Industry (BOI), and LEDCO Limited, have partnered with the National Sports Commission (NSC) to ensure the successful hosting of the continental event.

These collaborations signal a rising wave of investor confidence in Nigeria’s sports economy, which is increasingly being seen as a viable avenue for economic growth and national branding.

The championship aligns with President Bola Ahmed Tinubu’s Renewed Hope Initiative for the Nigerian Sports Economy (RHINSE)—a bold, forward-thinking strategy to position sports as a major contributor to GDP, employment, youth empowerment, and global competitiveness.

Through RHINSE, the Federal Government is actively promoting public-private partnerships to unlock new opportunities in the sector and boost innovation.

“This is not just a competition; it’s a strategic platform,” said Hon. Bukola Olopade, Director General of the NSC and Chairman of the Main Organizing Committee.

“Under RHINSE, we are building a future where sports drive growth, create jobs, and attract global attention.”

Over 50 African nations are expected to compete at the five-day event, with athlete delegations arriving from July 12. The championships will not only showcase elite athletic talent but also celebrate youth development, visionary leadership, and Nigeria’s growing capacity to host international sporting events.

As Abeokuta prepares to welcome the continent’s top junior athletes, the 2025 African U18/U20 Athletics Championships promises to be a landmark occasion for sport, youth empowerment, and strategic national development.
