Commonwealth Medallist Oji Headlines Nigeria's Squad for World U-20 Championships

Nigeria has unveiled a 15-member squad for the 2026 World Athletics U-20 Championships in Oregon, United States, with Commonwealth Games silver medallist Jessica Oji leading the country's medal hopes.

The championships will take place from Aug. 5 to Aug. 9, bringing together some of the world's brightest young athletics talents.

Oji heads into the competition in high spirits after making history at the Glasgow 2026 Commonwealth Games, where she became the first Nigerian in more than two decades to win a medal in the women's shot put, claiming a memorable silver.

Also named in the squad is sprint sensation Miracle Ezechukwu, who has enjoyed an outstanding season. The reigning African U-18 100m and 200m champion represented Nigeria at the World Relays before playing a key role in the country's gold medal-winning women's 4x100m relay team, which also set a championship record at the 2026 African Senior Championships.

Another athlete expected to make a strong impact is Israel Okon, who won a silver medal in the men's 200m at the 2026 NCAA Outdoor Championships, underlining his credentials ahead of the global junior competition.

Rosemary Chukwuma also brings valuable international experience to the team after winning silver medals in both the women's 100m and 200m at the African Senior Championships before helping Nigeria secure gold in the women's 4x100m relay.

The Nigerian contingent will compete across several track and field events as they aim to improve the country's standing and challenge for medals against the world's best junior athletes.

The championships are expected to provide another platform for Nigeria's emerging stars to showcase their talents and continue the country's proud tradition of producing world-class athletes.
