Chinese schoolgirl Yu Zidi has captured attention after clocking the fastest ever 200m individual medley time for a 12-year-old at China’s national championships. Despite finishing second behind 2024 Olympic finalist Yu Yuting, Yu’s time of 2 minutes 10.63 seconds is remarkable — fast enough to have qualified for the semi-finals had she swum it during last year’s Paris Olympics heats.
World Aquatics even highlighted her achievement on their official social media, dubbing her a "12-year-old sensation."
Yu, who will turn 13 in October, is now a strong candidate for China’s national team at the upcoming World Championships in Singapore this July. Her rise comes amid increased scrutiny of China’s elite swimmers, especially since the Paris Olympics, where 11 of the 23 Chinese athletes selected had previously tested positive for doping substances.
This prompted the International Testing Agency to increase testing frequency for Chinese swimmers, doubling the usual number of tests between early 2024 and the Paris Games.
The doping controversies have fueled skepticism from international competitors, including British swimmer Adam Peaty, who questioned the legitimacy of China’s victories following a relay event. Notably, two of China’s four gold medalists at Paris — Qin Haiyang and Sun Jiajun — were among those with positive tests before the Games.
China’s Anti-Doping Agency explained that the athletes had unintentionally ingested the heart medication trimetazidine, and the Chinese government reaffirmed its zero-tolerance stance on doping violations.
