Cape Town Marathon 2026 Set for Record-Breaking Showdown with Star-Studded Elite Fields

Posted : 22 May 2026

The 2026 Cape Town Marathon is set to become the fastest edition in its history, with a highly competitive elite field featuring multiple runners who have previously beaten the current course records. Organisers expect record-breaking performances across both the men’s and women’s races when the event takes place on 24 May in Cape Town.

This year’s race will attract around 27,000 marathon runners, alongside thousands more competing in associated 10km, 5km, and trail events, bringing the total participation to approximately 44,500 athletes. The event continues to grow as one of Africa’s largest mass participation sporting occasions.

The men’s elite field is particularly strong, featuring 13 athletes who have run faster than the current course record of 2:08:16. Among them is legendary distance runner Eliud Kipchoge, a multiple Olympic and world marathon champion, who enters as the fastest personal best runner in the field.

Other top contenders include Ethiopia’s Mohamed Esa and a deep group of Kenyan and Ethiopian athletes with sub-2:05 and sub-2:06 marathon credentials. Several runners arrive in strong recent form, increasing expectations of a fast and tactical race from the start.

The women’s race is equally competitive, with multiple athletes having personal bests under 2:20. Ethiopian runners Ruti Aga, Dera Dida and Mestawat Fikir are expected to lead the challenge for the podium, while experienced competitors such as Lonah Salpeter and Edna Kiplagat add further depth and race-winning experience.

Organisers say the quality of the field reflects the event’s growing status as it continues its bid to become Africa’s first Abbott World Marathon Major. The 2026 edition will also host the Age Group World Championships, attracting thousands of international runners across different categories.

The wheelchair races will also feature strong fields, including past winners Sho Watanabe and Geert Schipper, alongside other elite athletes from the United States, United Kingdom, Japan and South Africa.

With record depth across all categories and ideal conditions expected in Cape Town, the 2026 marathon is widely anticipated to produce some of the fastest times ever seen on the course.
