Chioma Nwachukwu and Hafsoh Majekodunmi have clinched gold and silver medals respectively for Nigeria in the women’s U-18 400m event at the Confederation of African Athletics (CAA) U-18/U-20 Championship.
The championship, currently taking place in Abeokuta, Ogun State, features athletes from 35 African countries competing in various track and field events.
Nwachukwu won the race with an impressive time of 52.47 seconds, while Majekodunmi followed closely with 54.43 seconds to secure the silver. Ethiopia’s Bikes Biset claimed the bronze medal after finishing in 55.31 seconds.
Speaking to journalists after the race, Nwachukwu expressed her delight at winning gold.
“I set my mind on winning the gold medal at this tournament. In 2023, I won the trials but couldn’t participate because of my age. Now, I’m focused on qualifying for the upcoming World Championship,” she said.
Majekodunmi, reflecting on her first international experience, admitted she was initially nervous but credited her teammate, Nwachukwu, for offering words of encouragement.
“I was scared at first, but Chioma helped calm me. This experience has boosted my confidence, especially as I look forward to the national trials coming up in Abeokuta in two weeks,” she stated.
Meanwhile, in the men’s U-18 400m event, Kenya's Simeon Araka claimed gold with a time of 47.46 seconds. Ghana’s Odjer Tetley took silver in 47.87 seconds, and Kenya’s Robert Sang secured bronze with 47.89 seconds.
Team Nigeria continues to chase more podium finishes as the championship progresses.
