Nigeria’s Ruth Usoro says she is fully prepared to shoulder the country’s hopes in the women’s long jump event at the ongoing CAA Senior Athletics Championships in Accra, Ghana.
The Nigerian athlete returns to familiar territory after her impressive performance at the 2023 African Games in Accra, where she clinched gold in the women’s triple jump with a leap of 13.80m.
With African record holder Ese Brume absent from this year’s competition, attention has shifted to Usoro and compatriot Favour Ofili as Nigeria’s leading medal prospects in the long jump event.
Despite the pressure, Usoro remains optimistic about her chances of making the podium.
“It is always a privilege representing Nigeria and I’m grateful to be back in Accra once again,” she said. “My focus now is fully on the long jump and I’m determined to give my best and compete for the title.”
Usoro was part of the Nigerian trio alongside Brume and Prestina Ochonogor that reached the women’s long jump final at the 2024 Olympic Games — a historic feat for Nigeria in the event.
However, with Brume and Ochonogor missing from the championships, Usoro is expected to spearhead Nigeria’s challenge against a strong Burkina Faso contingent led by Marthe Koala.
Koala, who holds a season’s best of 6.77m, enters the championships as one of the favourites after finishing behind Brume at both the 2023 African Games and the 2024 African Championships.
Other strong contenders expected to battle for medals include fellow Burkinabé athletes Awa Zongo and Nimata Nikiema.
The women’s long jump qualification event begins on Wednesday, while the final is scheduled for Thursday.
The absence of key stars places significant responsibility on Usoro to deliver a top performance for Team Nigeria. Her experience on the global stage and previous success in Accra will be vital as she aims to overcome a competitive field and secure a place on the podium.
