Bukola Olopade Rejects Xenophobia and Calls for Continental Unity at World Relays

Posted : 04 May 2026

The Director General of the National Sports Commission, Bukola Olopade, has issued a passionate plea for African unity. Speaking from Gaborone, Botswana, during the 2026 World Athletics Relays, Olopade condemned recent xenophobic attacks on migrants. He emphasized that the bond between Nigeria and South Africa should remain unbroken despite social tensions.

During his visit to Team Nigeria’s training camp, Olopade was seen engaging with South African sprint star Akani Simbine. The Director General used this interaction to highlight the symbolic importance of sports diplomacy. He noted that the sight of elite athletes from different nations sharing facilities serves as a powerful model for the rest of society.

Olopade specifically addressed the citizens of South Africa, urging them to stop attacking their fellow Africans. He reminded the continent that both nations are part of one large family. The NSC boss shared a video on social media alongside Simbine to reinforce his message of peace and mutual respect.

The training track in Gaborone provided a practical example of the harmony Olopade advocated for. Athletes from Nigeria, Kenya, Botswana, and South Africa were observed training together and exchanging words of encouragement. Olopade pointed to this collective preparation as the ideal standard for continental integration and youth engagement.

He further explained that sporting achievements often transcend national borders. Nigerians frequently cheer for Simbine’s success, just as South Africans celebrate when Nigerian stars perform well. Olopade believes this spirit of global harmony must move from the tracks to the streets and local neighborhoods.

The National Sports Commission remains committed to using sports as a tool for deepening diplomatic ties. Olopade concluded by stating that the commission will continue to leverage international competitions to advance African unity. This visit comes at a crucial time as concerns over regional safety continue to affect sporting schedules across the continent.
