Top British Athletes Urge Government to Support London’s 2029 World Championships Bid

Posted : 05 June 2025

A group of over 100 of Britain’s most celebrated athletes, including Sir Mo Farah, Dame Kelly Holmes, and Keely Hodgkinson, have signed an open letter to Prime Minister Keir Starmer calling for government backing of London’s bid to host the 2029 World Athletics Championships. The letter, which includes support from both past and present track and field stars, highlights the potential for lasting legacy and inspiration that a home-hosted event could bring, as well as the economic boost it would generate.

If successful, the proposal would see the championships return to London Stadium, requiring a one-time public investment in 2028 with the projected reward of £400 million in economic impact. The signatories emphasize that hosting the event would not only bring top-tier competition back to the UK but also re-energize public engagement with athletics.

Many of the athletes reflect on the transformative effect of previous home events, such as the 2012 Olympics and the 2017 World Championships, which sparked involvement in the sport at all levels across the country.

The formal bidding process for the 2029 event is expected to begin this summer, and campaigners are encouraging swift ministerial action to strengthen the UK’s position. London last hosted the World Championships in 2017, an event widely regarded as a success. Supporters believe that with the right backing, the city is well-placed to deliver another world-class championship that could further enhance the legacy of athletics in Britain.
