Kenny Bednarek delivered a powerful performance to win the men’s 200m at the Rabat Diamond League on Sunday, pulling clear of Olympic champion Letsile Tebogo to claim a convincing victory. The American sprinted to a season-best 19.69 seconds, building a strong early lead that Tebogo was unable to close, finishing 0.27 seconds behind.
The 27-year-old said he had not expected such a fast time but was confident he could break the 20-second barrier. He added that competing against the world’s best continues to motivate him as the season progresses.
In the women’s 100m, Jamaica’s Tina Clayton led a dominant display for her country, finishing first in 10.85 seconds to complete a Jamaican sweep of the podium. Lavanya Williams finished second, just a tenth behind, while Jonielle Smith secured third after a strong finish in the closing metres.
Clayton described her run as a positive step forward, noting that it was a season’s best performance, although she acknowledged there is still room for improvement in her technique.
One of the standout performances of the evening came in the men’s 800m, where Britain’s Max Burgin produced a major upset by defeating Olympic champion Emmanuel Wanyonyi. Burgin, who has battled injuries in recent seasons, controlled the race strongly to win in 1:42.98, more than half a second ahead of the Kenyan.
Wanyonyi admitted the race pushed him to his limits, calling it a valuable test and his fastest run of the season despite the defeat. Burgin’s performance has raised expectations ahead of the upcoming World Athletics Ultimate Championships.
In the field events, Ukrainian Olympic high jump champion Yaroslava Mahuchikh continued her dominance by clearing 1.97m to secure victory. She finished ahead of Australia’s Eleanor Patterson and Serbia’s Angelina Topic, both of whom cleared 1.94m.
Nigeria’s Tobi Amusan returned to winning form in the women’s 100m hurdles, clocking 12.28 seconds to take first place after narrowly missing out on victory in her previous outing. Her performance reaffirmed her status among the leading hurdlers this season.
Moroccan star Soufiane El Bakkali delighted the home crowd by winning the men’s 3000m steeplechase in 7:57.25, holding off Germany’s Frederik Ruppert in a strong finish.
American athletes also featured heavily across events. Cambrea Sturgis claimed the women’s 200m ahead of Kayla White, while Joe Kovacs won the shot put with a throw of 22.58m in an all-American podium finish. Valarie Allman added another Diamond League victory in the discus, sealing her win with a final-round throw of 68.75m.
The men’s 400m was won by Jacory Patterson in 44.11 seconds, while Olympic champion Quincy Hall endured a difficult race, finishing last.
The evening concluded with a thrilling men’s 1500m, where Yared Nuguse edged out Portugal’s Isaac Nader in a dramatic photo finish. Nuguse crossed the line in 3:30.35 before collapsing, later confirming he was exhausted but unhurt after a fiercely contested race.
