Edo 2026: Athletics to Light Up Day 4 as Akwa Ibom State Trials Reach Peak

Athletics is expected to dominate the spotlight as the Akwa Ibom State trials of the second Niger Delta Games (NDG) enter Day 4 on Monday, February 2.

With over 100 athletes set to compete for selection, athletics events scheduled for morning and afternoon sessions at the Godswill Akpabio International Stadium will include the 100m sprints, 400m, 800m, relay races, mixed relay races, and other track and field competitions.

According to the Day 4 schedule, the morning session will begin at 9:00 a.m. with the women’s 5,000m final and the men’s shot put final. This will be followed by the 100m heats for both men and women, alongside various field events and finals in the 400m, 1,500m, hurdles, jumps, and throws. The session is expected to run until 1:15 p.m., promising continuous action on the track and in the field.

The afternoon session will commence at 3:00 p.m. and will feature finals in the javelin, discus, long jump, 200m, 800m, high jump, and the men’s 5,000m final, which will conclude the day’s programme at 6:00 p.m.

Elsewhere, kokowa will take place at the Uyo Township Stadium at 11:00 a.m. Meanwhile, due to ongoing maintenance at the Olympic-size swimming pool, swimming events have been scheduled to hold at UltraFit Nigeria Limited, Ewet Housing Estate, Uyo, at the same time.

Members of the public are encouraged to attend events at the various venues and cheer the athletes as the trials remain open to spectators.

The Niger Delta Games, sponsored by the Niger Delta Development Commission and organised by Dunamis-Icon Limited, are scheduled to take place in Edo State from February 20 to 27, with all nine states from the region expected to participate.
