Athletic Heat 10th Anniversary Meet to Showcase Nigeria’s Athletics Depth

Posted : 06 November 2026

The 10th anniversary edition of the Athletic Heat Meet will provide a platform for Nigeria’s established athletics stars and emerging talents to showcase their abilities when more than 850 athletes converge on Lagos on Saturday.

Nigerian internationals Miracle Ezechukwu, Samson Nathaniel and Adams Samuel Kure will headline the competition scheduled for the Yaba College of Technology Sports Complex, with action expected across several track and field events.

The competition, which celebrates a decade of Athletic Heat’s contribution to athletics development, is expected to attract elite performers, promising young athletes and grassroots competitors.

Ezechukwu will be among the major attractions in the women’s sprint events, following her impressive rise through the ranks of Nigerian athletics.

The teenage sprinter announced herself in 2025 with three gold medals at the African U-18 and U-20 Championships in Abeokuta.

She has continued her upward trajectory this season, recording personal bests of 11.15 seconds in the 100m and 22.77 seconds in the 200m.

At the African Senior Athletics Championships in Accra, Ghana, she placed fourth in the women’s 100m before helping Nigeria secure gold in the 4x100m relay in a championship-record time of 42.94 seconds.

Nathaniel will bring international experience to the men’s 400m, having represented Nigeria at the Olympic Games and World Athletics Championships.

The quarter-miler was also part of Nigeria’s gold-winning men’s 4x400m relay team at the 2023 African Games in Accra.

He maintained his international presence in 2026, recording 45.89 seconds in the 400m at the Addis Ababa Athletics Meet while contributing to Nigeria’s relay campaign.

With a personal best of 45.23 seconds, his participation is expected to strengthen the quality of the men's quarter-mile competition.

In the field events, Kure will lead the men's javelin challenge after establishing himself among Nigeria’s leading performers in the discipline.

He won bronze at the Islamic Solidarity Games in Riyadh, Saudi Arabia, in November 2025 with a throw of 76.01m, finishing behind Pakistan’s Arshad Nadeem and Muhammad Yasir.

Kure has also represented Nigeria at the African Senior Athletics Championships, adding international pedigree to the anniversary competition.

Beyond the presence of the three internationals, the meet will provide opportunities for emerging athletes to test themselves against established competitors.

The organisers have completed the seeding of events and allocation of bib numbers, with participants advised to consult the Roster Athletics app for their schedules, heat and flight assignments.

The senior men's 100m has attracted 320 entries, with the top 32 athletes by ranking progressing to four finals, while the top 24 in the women's category will qualify for the finals.

In the age-grade competitions, the U-15 100m will feature heats, with finalists determined by ranking.

The U-11 boys' 100m will have two heats and a final, while the top eight competitors in the U-11 girls' event will advance to the final.

For the 400m and 800m events, athletes have been seeded according to their season-best performances, with the fastest competitors grouped in Final A.

The hurdles finals will accommodate six athletes each because of equipment availability, while the long jump will feature two flights based on performance levels.

Prizes will be awarded according to the respective event structures and athletes' performances. However, under-age competitors in throwing events will have their results recorded without qualifying for prizes.

The organising committee has also urged registered athletes unable to participate to notify it by Tuesday, Nov. 3, to facilitate the withdrawal of their entries and prevent unnecessary Did Not Start (DNS) records.

Participants are expected to arrive early with their allocated bib numbers and confirm their heat or flight assignments before competition.

Activities will begin at 8:00 a.m. at the Yaba College of Technology Sports Complex.

With a decade of grassroots engagement behind it, the anniversary meet is expected to celebrate Athletic Heat's contribution to athletics while providing a competitive platform for Nigeria's established stars and the next generation of track and field talents.
