The Asagba of Asaba, Prof. Epiphany Azinge (SAN), has announced preparations for the maiden edition of the 10-kilometer Asaba International Road Race, scheduled for October 5.
Azinge disclosed this during a media briefing at his palace in Asaba, where he officially unveiled the event.
He said the race would be his community’s contribution to the promotion of grassroots sports in Delta State and Nigeria at large.
The royal father noted that the event would attract long-distance runners from both within and outside the country.
He added that the international road race aims to showcase Asaba as the fastest-growing state capital in Nigeria and Africa, drawing global attention from sports lovers.
Azinge also highlighted the event’s potential to boost local economic activity and promote Asaba’s rich cultural heritage on the international stage.
According to him, the competition would allow participants to appreciate the city’s infrastructural transformation, prevailing peace, and the warm hospitality of its people.
He emphasized that the event is part of his vision to brand and position Asaba on the global map.
Azinge noted that the proposed October 5 race date—recommended by the Sports Promotion Committee he inaugurated—coincides with his first coronation anniversary.
He praised the committee for its swift action and expressed hope that future editions of the race would grow to meet international marathon standards, eventually covering 42 kilometers.
In his remarks, the Chairman of the committee, Wing Commander Peter Iweze (rtd.), thanked the traditional ruler for his commitment to sports development. He assured the monarch of the committee’s readiness to deliver on its mandate.
Iweze said the event would not only attract elite long-distance runners but also position Asaba as a major sporting destination, further stimulating the local and state economy through the influx of thousands of participants and visitors.
Earlier, the race consultant, Dr. Moses Nwanze, outlined some of the planned activities, including a showcase of traditional attire and artifacts.
He said the race would begin at the Stephen Keshi Stadium or St. Patrick’s College, proceeding through Anwai Road, Summit Road, Mariam Babangida Way, and Okpanam Road, and concluding at the Cenotaph.
Nwanze, who is also a member of the planning committee, confirmed that cash prizes would be awarded to all participating athletes, and that registration for the race would be free.
