Sweden’s Armand “Mondo” Duplantis once again dominated the pole vault, securing his fourth consecutive European title at Alexander Stadium in Birmingham. The Olympic champion cleared 6.15 metres to set a new championship record and finish ahead of Greece’s Emmanouil Karalis.
Karalis produced a strong performance of his own, clearing 6.00m to take silver, while France’s Baptiste Thiery completed the podium with a best of 5.85m. Duplantis’ victory further underlined his extraordinary consistency at major championships, extending his run of European titles.
The competition eventually became a two-man battle between Duplantis and Karalis once the bar moved beyond six metres. After both athletes cleared 6.00m, Duplantis successfully navigated 6.10m before going over 6.15m to surpass the previous European Championship record of 6.10m that he had established in Rome two years earlier.
Duplantis chose not to pursue another world record after securing gold, instead ending his evening after the championship-record clearance. His victory was particularly satisfying following a difficult build-up that included his withdrawal from the London Diamond League because of a thigh problem.
The 26-year-old said winning was his main objective and expressed his satisfaction at adding another European medal to his collection. He also acknowledged how quickly his career has progressed and said he wanted to appreciate achievements such as winning four European titles in succession.
Duplantis arrived in Birmingham as the clear favourite and once again delivered when it mattered most. His latest performance adds another major championship achievement to a résumé that already includes Olympic and world titles, while reaffirming his status as the dominant figure in men's pole vaulting.
