Amy Hunt Claims First Senior European Gold With Stunning 100m Victory

Posted : 11 August 2026

Amy Hunt delivered a breakthrough performance in Birmingham, surging through the field to win the women's 100m at the 2026 European Athletics Championships and secure her first senior international title.

The 24-year-old Briton clocked 11.00 seconds, finishing ahead of Poland's Ewa Swoboda in 11.02 and Belgium's Delphine Nkansa in 11.06. Defending champion Dina Asher-Smith finished fifth in 11.10.

Hunt's victory was particularly significant following her breakthrough at last year's World Championships in Tokyo, where she won silver in the 200m. She had also taken silver in the 100m at the Commonwealth Games shortly before arriving in Birmingham, making the European title the latest step in her rapid progression.

Despite being among the athletes who started slowly, Hunt remained composed and produced a powerful finish to move from near the back of the field into first place. Her performance underlined the strength that has increasingly become a defining feature of her sprinting.

The victory also represents a major milestone after injury disrupted the early part of Hunt's senior career. Her progress has accelerated in recent seasons, with her international medals now being followed by major championship gold.

Hunt's triumph provided Britain with its first individual gold of the championships on home soil. Great Britain had earlier secured silver in the mixed 4x400m relay, with Norway taking the title.

With the 100m title secured, Hunt has further opportunities to add to her medal collection in Birmingham. She is also scheduled to compete in the 200m and both the women's and mixed 4x100m relays.
