Team Nigeria delivered another outstanding performance on Day 2 of the 2026 CAA Senior Athletics Championships in Accra, Ghana, with sprint hurdler Oluwatobiloba Amusan once again proving her dominance on the African stage.
The world record holder powered to victory in the women’s 100m hurdles, securing Nigeria’s first gold medal of the championships and reaffirming her status as Africa’s queen of hurdles. Fellow Nigerian, Adaobi Tabugbo, added to the country’s success by claiming bronze in the same event to ensure a double podium finish for Team Nigeria.
Nigeria’s second gold medal of the day came in the Mixed 4x400m Relay, where the quartet of Ezekiel Asuquo, Toheebat Jimoh, Victor Sampson, and veteran runner Patience Okon-George produced a superb display to finish first in a time of 3:16.41 ahead of Botswana, Kenya, and hosts Ghana.
Chairman of the National Sports Commission, Shehu Dikko, praised the athletes for their determination and impressive outing at the championships.
He said the performances recorded so far reflect the resilience, dedication, and quality within Team Nigeria, expressing confidence that more medals would come in the remaining events.
Nigeria also secured silver through Sade Olatoye in the women’s Hammer Throw after recording a best mark of 69.60m.
In the men’s 100m final, Ezeakor raced to a bronze medal behind Cameroon’s Emmanuel Eseme and South Africa’s Bradley Nkoana.
Rosemary Chukwuma also made headlines in the women’s 100m final after finishing strongly in a race that sparked controversy.
Despite replays reportedly showing the Nigerian crossed the line first, officials awarded her the silver medal.
With an impressive haul of gold, silver, and bronze medals already secured, Team Nigeria heads into Day 3 full of confidence and momentum as the championships continue in Ghana.
The collective success of the athletes on the second day has positioned Nigeria as a formidable force at the CAA Championships.
