Amusan, Ofili Win in Brescia as Ajayi Claims Bellinzona 100m

Tobi Amusan, Favour Ofili and Kayinsola Ajayi delivered notable victories for Nigeria at World Athletics Continental Tour meetings in Europe on Sunday. Amusan and Ofili triumphed at the Grand Prix Brescia in Italy, while Ajayi won the men’s 100m at GalAthletics Bellinzona in Switzerland.

Amusan dominated the women’s 100m hurdles in Brescia with a time of 12.56 seconds. She produced the winning run despite a strong 1.7m/s headwind and finished ahead of American Alaysha Johnson, who clocked 12.62 seconds, while Jamaica’s Ackera Nugent was third in 12.75.

The victory gave Amusan a timely response after she finished second at the Zurich Diamond League on August 27. American Masai Russell won that race in 12.23 seconds before later setting a new world record of 12.09 seconds, surpassing Amusan’s previous 12.12 mark.

Ofili was equally impressive in the women’s 200m. The Nigerian sprinter clocked 22.03 seconds with no wind assistance to win comfortably, finishing ahead of Jamaica’s Ashanti Moore in 22.47 and Côte d’Ivoire’s Maboundou Kone in 22.66.

The performance continues Ofili’s strong season on the international circuit. Ireland-based Nigerian-born sprinter Rhasidat Adeleke finished sixth in 22.85 seconds, while Ofili controlled the race from the later stages to secure another major meeting victory.

Ajayi completed the Nigerian treble in Bellinzona by winning a high-quality men’s 100m final in 9.91 seconds. He finished ahead of American Ronnie Baker, who ran 9.94, and South Africa’s Akani Simbine, who took third in 9.95.

Ajayi’s winning time came with a legal 0.2m/s tailwind. It marked his 15th career sub-10-second performance and his ninth legal sub-10 clocking of the 2026 season, underlining his consistency at the highest level.

The 22-year-old Nigerian has also enjoyed two Diamond League victories this season and entered the Bellinzona meeting as one of the leading sprinters in the field. His 9.91-second run further strengthens his position ahead of the final phase of the outdoor season.

Amusan will now turn her attention to the Diamond League Final in Brussels from September 4 to 5. She is a three-time Diamond League champion and will seek another title after her strong showing in Brescia.
