World record holder in the 100m hurdles, Oluwatobiloba Amusan, and long jump ace Ese Brume are set to lead Nigeria’s formidable squad to the 2025 World Athletics Championships in Tokyo, Japan.
The Athletics Federation of Nigeria (AFN) has announced a 15-member team comprising seven women and eight men, with high hopes of securing podium finishes. The delegation of athletes and officials is scheduled to depart Nigeria today (Tuesday), while some U.S.-based athletes have already arrived in Tokyo ahead of the competition, which begins on Saturday, 13 September.
Topping the roster is Amusan, the 2022 world champion, who will be aiming to rediscover her best form on the global stage. She is joined by shot put specialist and Olympic/world finalist Chukwuebuka Enekwechi, as well as 22-year-old 400m hurdler Ezekiel Nathaniel, who has enjoyed a breakthrough 2025 season. Nathaniel has broken Nigeria’s national record five times this year, clocking a personal best of 47.31 seconds in Silesia — the fifth-fastest time worldwide this season. He has also impressed in the 200m with a season’s best of 20.17 seconds.
Brume, Africa’s long jump record holder at 7.17m and a consistent global medal contender, also headlines the team. She is joined by fellow jumper Prestina Ochonogor and discus thrower Chioma Onyekwere-Lyons.
Other athletes on the squad include Samuel Ogazi (400m), Kayinsola Ajayi (100m), Obiageri Amaechi (discus), Charles Godfred (long jump), Rosemary Chukwuma (100m), Oyesade Olatoye (hammer), Israel Okon (100m), and Chidi Okezie (400m).
Amusan remains Nigeria’s only world champion to date, thanks to her record-breaking triumph in Oregon in 2022. Brume, meanwhile, returns to Tokyo — a stage where she has previously excelled — with hopes of delivering another medal-winning performance.
