Amusan bounces back from world-record loss with Brescia victory

Nigeria’s Tobi Amusan responded to the loss of her women’s 100m hurdles world record by returning to winning ways at the Grand Prix Brescia in Italy on Sunday.

Amusan clocked 12.56 seconds at the Gabre Gabric Stadium to win ahead of American Alaysha Johnson, who finished in 12.62 seconds, and Jamaica’s Ackera Nugent, who ran 12.75 seconds.

Former world record holder Kendra Harrison finished fifth in 12.94 seconds, while Japan’s Hitomi Nakajima was fourth in 12.80 seconds.

Amusan’s winning performance came despite a strong 1.7m/s headwind that made the race more demanding and limited the possibility of fast times.

The victory was therefore more significant for its competitive value than the clock, particularly given the quality of the field.

It also represented an immediate response from the Nigerian after she finished second in 12.23 seconds at the Zurich Diamond League, where American Masai Russell broke Amusan’s four-year-old world record with a stunning 12.09 seconds.

Amusan had set the previous record of 12.12 seconds at the 2022 World Athletics Championships in Eugene, where she also won the world title.

Rather than allowing the setback to affect her momentum, the Nigerian bounced back in Brescia to underline her status among the world's leading sprint hurdlers.

Her victory over Johnson, Nugent and Harrison — athletes with strong international credentials — further demonstrated her consistency at the highest level.

The Brescia meeting, a Silver-level World Athletics Continental Tour event, provided Amusan with another opportunity to compete against elite opposition as the season enters its final stages.

With the 12.56-second effort achieved in difficult wind conditions, Amusan will now look to build on the victory and chase faster times in her remaining races.

The world record may have changed hands, but her latest triumph shows that Amusan's appetite for victory remains undiminished.
