Allyson Felix Plans Shock Olympic Comeback at 40 for Los Angeles 2028

Posted : 28 April 2026

Allyson Felix, the most decorated female athlete in Olympic track and field history, has revealed plans for a surprise return to competition at the age of 40. The American sprint legend is aiming for a sixth Olympic appearance at the 2028 Games, which will be held in her hometown of Los Angeles.

Felix last competed internationally at the 2022 World Championships in Eugene before stepping away from the sport. Since then, she has focused on her family, welcoming her second child in 2024 while also continuing her work in athletics governance, including her role with the LA 2028 organising committee.

In discussing her decision, Felix described the opportunity to compete at a home Olympics as a unique and powerful motivation. She said the emotional pull of representing her country in Los Angeles was strong enough to inspire her return to training and competition.

Throughout her career, Felix has become one of the most successful athletes in Olympic history, winning 11 Olympic medals, including seven golds. She claimed her only individual Olympic title in the 200m at the London 2012 Games and was a dominant force in relay events across multiple Olympic cycles.

She also holds an extraordinary record at the World Championships, where she has won 20 medals, including 14 golds, making her the most decorated athlete in the competition’s history across both men and women.

Reflecting on her time away from the track, Felix admitted that watching the Paris 2024 Olympics from the stands brought mixed emotions, as she enjoyed the event but also missed competing at the highest level.

While acknowledging that she will not be at her physical peak at 40, Felix said she is approaching the comeback with clear expectations and realism. She added that she would regret not attempting a return, even if the outcome is uncertain.

Felix also expressed her excitement at the possibility of experiencing the atmosphere of a home Olympic Games as an athlete, saying she would embrace the opportunity regardless of the result, while continuing to support her children and fellow competitors.
