Seven-time Olympic gold medallist Allyson Felix has revealed she is working toward a return to elite competition with the goal of making the United States mixed 4x400 metres relay squad for the 2028 Los Angeles Olympics. The 40-year-old, who initially retired in 2022, confirmed in April that she plans to come out of retirement.
Speaking during an appearance on the TODAY show, Felix said er preferred path back to the Olympic stage would be through a relay role, particularly in the mixed 4x400m event. She acknowledged the challenge ahead but expressed enthusiasm about attempting to reach the required performance level once again.
Felix, widely regarded as the most decorated female track and field athlete in history with 11 Olympic medals, said the opportunity to compete in her hometown played a major role in her decision. She explained that the idea of the Los Angeles Games makes the comeback attempt feel especially meaningful.
The American sprinter also reflected on her previous achievements, including becoming the oldest American to compete in an Olympic relay when she won gold in the women’s 4x400m at the Tokyo Games at age 35. She said the upcoming challenge is less about proving herself and more about exploring what she can still achieve at this stage of her life and career.
