Posted : 14 May 2026

Former Nigerian Olympian and Chief Executive Officer of the Podium Performance Commission, Yusuf Alli, has hailed the emergence of Nigeria’s young athletics talents following Team Nigeria’s impressive gold medal triumph in the 4x400m mixed relay at the ongoing African Senior Athletics Championship in Accra, Ghana.

Alli described the victory as another strong indication that Nigerian athletics is entering a promising new era driven by fearless and talented youngsters capable of competing on the global stage.

The former African long jump champion particularly singled out teenage sensation, Toheebat Adebisi Jimoh, for special praise after her outstanding contribution to the relay success.

According to him, the teenager demonstrated remarkable calmness, confidence, and maturity despite competing against some of Africa’s finest athletes.

“All credit must go to the athletes and coaches for the incredible job they are doing. Winning gold at this level is never easy, but what impressed me most was the confidence and maturity shown by young Toheebat Adebisi Jimoh,” Alli said.

“For a teenager to perform with such composure on a stage like the African Championship speaks volumes about her future.”

Alli further emphasized that the performances of young athletes at the championship and recent international competitions show that Nigeria still possesses a deep pool of talents capable of restoring the country’s dominance in world athletics.

He noted that the steady rise of athletes like Toheebat reflects the effectiveness of ongoing efforts to nurture emerging stars for future global competitions, including the Olympics and World Championships.

“The future of Nigerian athletics lies in the youth, and that is exactly what Toheebat and several others have shown from the World Relays to this championship in Accra,” he added.

“They are proving that Nigeria still possesses enormous talent capable of competing with the very best in the world.”

Team Nigeria’s gold medal performance in the mixed relay has further strengthened the country’s medal ambitions at the championship as Nigerian athletes continue to shine in several track and field events in Accra.

The emergence of these young talents highlights a successful transition period for the nation's athletics program. With continued support and development, these athletes are expected to be the cornerstone of Nigeria's representation at upcoming global sporting events.
