Alison dos Santos Smashes 400m Hurdles World Record in Zurich

Brazilian hurdler Alison dos Santos produced a stunning performance at the Zurich Diamond League, breaking the men’s 400m hurdles world record with a time of 45.80 seconds. The 26-year-old comfortably defeated Norway’s Karsten Warholm, lowering the previous mark of 45.94 set by the Norwegian at the Tokyo Olympics in 2021.

Dos Santos entered the race unbeaten in the event this season but had not appeared likely to challenge Warholm’s long-standing record. He controlled the race from the start, cleared the final hurdle with plenty of momentum and powered to a landmark performance that also made him the first Brazilian to hold a world record in a track event.

Warholm finished second in 46.69 seconds, while Nigeria’s Ezekiel Nathaniel took third in 47.50. The result was Dos Santos’ fifth Diamond League victory of the 2026 season and extended his unbeaten run heading into next month’s Diamond League Final in Brussels.

Less than 40 minutes later, another hurdles world record fell. Olympic champion Masai Russell ran 12.09 seconds in the women’s 100m hurdles, taking 0.03 seconds off Nigeria’s Tobi Amusan’s previous record of 12.12. Amusan finished second in 12.23, while Nadine Visser was third in 12.34.

The Zurich meeting also produced several other notable performances. Julien Alfred won the women’s 100m in a Saint Lucian record of 10.70 seconds, while Kenya’s Emmanuel Wanyonyi clocked 1:41.76 to record the fastest 800m time of the season.
