Alfred headlines Monaco Diamond League with historic 200m run as Wanyonyi sets world record

Posted : 14 July 2026

Julien Alfred produced the standout performance of the Monaco Diamond League on Friday, storming to a world-leading 21.51 seconds in the women's 200 metres to become the third-fastest woman in history over the distance.

The Saint Lucian Olympic 100m champion overcame a slow reaction from the blocks before unleashing a powerful finish over the closing metres to secure a convincing victory ahead of Adaejah Hodge of the British Virgin Islands, who clocked 21.76 seconds. American Gabby Thomas finished third in 21.84 seconds.

"It's not about the reaction time, it's about how you finish," Alfred said after the race. "I didn't realise how fast it was until I crossed the line."

The meeting also delivered a world record in the men's 1,000 metres as Kenya's Emmanuel Wanyonyi stopped the clock at 2:11.83, erasing compatriot Noah Ngeny's 27-year-old record by 0.13 seconds.

The Olympic 800m champion, making his debut over the distance, finished comfortably ahead of Britain's Jake Wightman, with Algeria's Djamel Sedjati taking third place.

"This was the first time I ran the 1,000m, and directly breaking the world record makes me so happy. I want to thank the other athletes for pushing me to my limit," Wanyonyi said.

Jamaica's Oblique Seville continued his impressive sprint form by winning the men's 100m in 9.88 seconds, ahead of American Jordan Anthony (9.92 seconds) and Cameroon's Emmanuel Eseme (10.00 seconds).

Botswana's Busang Collen Kebinatshipi extended his dominance in the men's 400m, recording a fifth consecutive Diamond League victory in 43.44 seconds. Americans Jacory Patterson and Rai Benjamin finished second and third, respectively.

In the women's 400m, Dominican Republic star Marileidy Paulino remained unbeaten this season with a winning time of 48.67 seconds, ahead of Aaliyah Butler of the United States and Czech athlete Lurdes Gloria Manuel.

Olympic champion Masai Russell maintained her superb form in the women's 100m hurdles, cruising to victory in 12.20 seconds ahead of fellow American Alaysha Johnson, while the Netherlands' Nadine Visser finished third.

Switzerland's Dominic Lokinyomo Lobalu claimed the men's 5,000m in dramatic fashion, edging American Graham Blanks on the line, with Bahrain's Birhanu Balew taking third.

In the field events, Australia's Nina Kennedy cleared a world-leading 4.95m to win the women's pole vault and become only the sixth woman to achieve that height. Swedish star Armand "Mondo" Duplantis won the men's pole vault with 6.07m but failed in three attempts to improve his own world record of 6.15m.

China's Yan Ziyi won the women's javelin with a throw of 68.75m, Cuba's Leyanis Perez claimed the women's triple jump with 15.06m, Greece's Miltiadis Tentoglou took the men's long jump with 8.61m, while Ukraine's Oleh Doroshchuk won the men's high jump after clearing 2.32m.

The Monaco Diamond League once again delivered world-class performances, with Alfred's historic sprint and Wanyonyi's record-breaking run highlighting an evening of exceptional athletics across both the track and field events.
