The inaugural Akani Simbine Classic marked a significant milestone for South African athletics, as the country hosted its first World Athletics Continental Tour Silver meeting at Pilditch Stadium in Pretoria. The event attracted a strong international field and delivered high-level performances, reinforcing South Africa’s growing presence on the global track and field stage.

In the men’s 100m, Emmanuel Eseme of Cameroon led the way with an impressive victory in 10.03 seconds. He edged out American sprinter Pjai Austin and Canada’s Olympic champion Andre De Grasse, who finished close behind in a tightly contested final.

Home favourite Akani Simbine thrilled local fans by recording the fastest time of the meeting in the heats with a wind-assisted 9.98 seconds. However, he was unable to challenge in the final after picking up an injury, eventually finishing eighth, though his presence remained central to the event’s success.

The women’s sprints also showcased strong depth, with Cambrea Sturgis clocking 10.94 seconds to win the 100m ahead of Maia McCoy. South African runners gained valuable experience competing against top international opposition.

In middle-distance events, Kenya’s Noah Kibet secured victory in the 800m with a time of 1:44.96, while Britain’s Elliot Giles and South Africa’s Christopher Swart followed. In the 3000m, Tshepo Tshite delighted the home crowd by claiming a convincing win.

The field events added further quality to the programme, with Croatia’s Olympic champion Sara Kolak winning the women’s javelin with a leading throw of 59.23 metres, ahead of South Africa’s Jana van Schalkwyk. Overall, the meet highlighted both elite international talent and the strength of African athletics on the global stage.
