Ajayi Matches Baker’s 9.93 to Finish Fourth at Ultimate Championships

Nigeria’s Kayinsola Ajayi produced an impressive performance in the men’s 100m final at the World Athletics Ultimate Championships Budapest 26 on Saturday, clocking 9.93 seconds to finish fourth.

Ajayi matched the time of American Ronnie Baker, who claimed the bronze medal, but was edged into fourth place in a tightly contested race featuring some of the world’s leading sprinters.

The Nigerian’s performance placed him firmly among the leading contenders in a final eventually won by American Kenny Bednarek in a season-best 9.85 seconds.

Running into a -0.6m/s headwind, Bednarek stayed within touching distance of world champion Oblique Seville through the middle stages before producing a decisive finish to secure the inaugural Ultimate Championship title.

Seville crossed the line second in 9.90 seconds, while Baker took bronze in 9.93, with Ajayi recording the same time to finish just outside the medals.

For Bednarek, the victory ended a long wait for a major individual title after the American had collected four global silver medals at previous championships.

In the women’s 100m, Melissa Jefferson-Wooden also made history by becoming the inaugural Ultimate Championship champion in the event after prevailing in a star-studded final.

Jefferson-Wooden defeated Olympic champion Julien Alfred and former world champion Sha’Carri Richardson, with Alfred taking silver in 10.74 seconds and Richardson finishing third in 10.76.

The victories by Bednarek and Jefferson-Wooden saw both athletes claim the first-ever Ultimate Championship 100m titles.
