African Stars Shine as Diamond League Regular Season Ends in Zurich

African athletes delivered a series of impressive performances as the 2026 Diamond League regular season concluded in Zurich, with competitors from Kenya, Algeria, South Africa, Morocco, Uganda, Ethiopia and Nigeria making their mark.

Kenya led the way, with Olympic and world champion Emmanuel Wanyonyi winning a fiercely contested men’s 800m in a world-leading 1:41.76. He edged Algeria’s Djamel Sedjati, who clocked a season-best 1:41.83, while compatriot Slimane Moula also reached the podium in 1:43.52.

Kenyan athletes also dominated the women’s 3000m steeplechase. Faith Cherotich secured victory in 8:55.82, narrowly ahead of compatriot Doris Lemngole, while Uganda’s Olympic champion Peruth Chemutai took third in 8:58.28. Kenya’s Phanuel Kipkosgei Koech added a second-place finish in the men’s 1500m with 3:31.84.

South Africa enjoyed another strong showing through Sinesipho Dambile, who finished second in the men’s 200m in 19.82. Only American Kenny Bednarek, who produced a world-leading 19.62, was faster. Dambile's result continued an impressive Diamond League campaign in which he had reached the podium at five meetings.

Nigeria's Tobi Amusan also claimed silver in the women's 100m hurdles, running a season-best 12.23. The former world-record holder finished behind American Olympic champion Masai Russell, who lowered the world record to 12.09.

Morocco's Anass Essayi placed fourth in the men's 1500m in 3:32.05, finishing ahead of Olympic champion Jakob Ingebrigtsen. Ethiopia was represented by Saida Tsehaye, who finished fourth in the women's 800m in 1:57.33, while several Ethiopian runners also featured inside the top 10 of the men's 3000m.

The Zurich meeting produced a spectacular conclusion to the regular Diamond League season, with two world records falling as Brazil's Alison dos Santos broke the men's 400m hurdles mark and Russell surpassed Amusan's previous 100m hurdles record. The Diamond League season now moves to the final in Brussels on September 4-5.
