Africa takes centre stage as elite athletics season builds momentum across continent

As the global athletics season gains pace, Africa is emerging as a key hub for elite competition, hosting a series of major events across April and May. The continent is not only producing top-tier athletes but also strengthening its reputation as a reliable organiser of international championships.

A major highlight of the period is the World Athletics Relays in Gaborone, Botswana, scheduled for 2–3 May 2026. The event brings together top national teams competing for medals and qualification spots for future global competitions, while also showcasing Africa’s growing capability in hosting complex international sporting events.

Attention then shifts to Accra, Ghana, where the African Senior Athletics Championships will take place from 12–17 May 2026. The championship serves as the continent’s premier athletics competition, bringing together established stars and emerging talents competing across all track and field disciplines.

Together, these events highlight Africa’s expanding influence in global athletics, offering crucial competitive opportunities, ranking points, and a platform for the next generation of champions to emerge on home soil.
