Africa's Queen of the Track, Amusan pledges more commitment to Nigerian cause

Posted : 22 March 2024

Africa's reigning Queen of the Track, Tobiloba Amusan, says it's an honor and privilege to compete at the ongoing 13th African Games in Accra, Ghana.

The 27-year-old Ogun indigene, Amusan, gave the word of assurance after grabbing two gold medals on Day 3 of the athletics event.

“This is a national assignment, and I see no reason why I shouldn't be here. I run for a living. I don't know why people expect me to choose the competitions that I need to compete at,” the world record holder stated.

“I compete when it's time to compete, so nothing like, it's the African Games why am I here. I'm representing myself, Africa, and Nigeria as a whole,” she added.

World record holder Tobi Amusan won gold in the women’s 100m hurdle final at the ongoing African Games in Accra, Ghana!

She went into the race as the favorite, but she false started after going into the blocks for the first time due to the noise from the crowd in the stadium.

She received a yellow card and lined up again, and this time she made it count with style and class.

When the gun went off for the second time, she made the race her own from start to finish, clocking a time of 12.89 seconds.

With that feat, she completed a hat-trick of African Games titles with that win, having won the last two editions in Congo Brazzaville and Rabat and also defeated Sidonie Fiadanantsoa who ran 13.19 seconds to finish 2nd and Zimbabwe’s Ashley Tinashe Kamangirirain 13.59 seconds.

Amusan later anchored the Team Nigeria Athletics women to win gold in the 4×100m.
