Africa Becomes Global Athletics Hub as Continental Tour and Championships Light Up 2026 Season

Africa is set to play a central role in the 2026 global athletics calendar, hosting a series of major competitions between April and May that underline the continent’s growing influence in the sport. From World Athletics Continental Tour meetings to continental championships and global relay events, the season highlights Africa’s rise as both a talent hub and a premier competition destination.

The busy schedule begins in April with the Botswana Golden Grand Prix on 26 April in Gaborone. The event, part of the Continental Tour Gold/Silver structure, attracts top international athletes and serves as a key early-season test for form and fitness.

Just two days later, attention shifts to South Africa for the inaugural Simbine Classic on 28 April. The meet marks a milestone as South Africa hosts its first Continental Tour Silver event, further strengthening the country’s position in global athletics hosting.

The momentum continues into May with the World Athletics Relays, scheduled for 2–3 May in Botswana. The competition brings together elite sprint relay teams from across the world, with qualification spots for future global championships at stake, making it one of the most strategic events on the calendar.

Later in the month, the continent’s competitive peak arrives with the African Senior Athletics Championships in Ghana from 12–17 May. The event serves as Africa’s premier athletics championship, determining continental champions across track and field disciplines and offering emerging athletes a platform to break onto the global stage.

Together, these events reflect Africa’s expanding role in world athletics—not only as a source of elite performers but also as a trusted organiser of high-level international competitions, strengthening its position on the global sporting map.
