AFN VP Akuchukwu Aghazu Celebrated for Decades of Relentless Service to Nigerian Athletics

Posted : 02 July 2026

Athletics Federation of Nigeria (AFN) Second Vice President, Ms. Akuchukwu Aghazu, remains an influential figure in the structural growth of Nigerian track and field. Her multi-decade career spans roles as an elite administrator, grassroots talent developer, and an active long-distance runner. Stakeholders across the sports industry widely recognize her deeply rooted passion for athlete welfare and athletic excellence.

Aghazu possesses extensive administrative experience gathered from attending global showpieces. She has represented Nigeria at the Olympic Games, World Athletics Championships, World Relays, and the Commonwealth Games. These international assignments have shaped her strategic approach to sports development back home. Beyond her executive oversight, she leads by example on the track. She has completed over 39 marathons and five ultramarathons globally. Her competitive background includes participation in the World Marathon Majors, South Africa's Comrades Ultra Marathon, and the Houston Marathon. Domestically, she remains a regular feature at the Access Bank Lagos City Marathon and the Abuja International Marathon.

This firsthand competitive background directly enhances her effectiveness as a federation leader. Understanding the psychological and physical strain of elite training allows her to advocate fiercely for athlete support systems. Beyond her duties at the AFN, Aghazu is the founder and tournament director of the Bodyline Abuja Half Marathon. The event has successfully completed five editions; it serves as a crucial platform for discovering long-distance talent.

Furthermore, she introduced the Abuja Fittest and Abuja Strongest competitions to promote public health and physical fitness. Sponsored by financial giant Norrenberger, these initiatives have distributed over ₦2 million in direct prize grants to athletes. Notable beneficiaries include Miracle Ezechukwu, Patience Okon, and Tyler Johnson. To ensure long-term sustainability, Aghazu has sponsored six local coaches to upgrade their technical certifications. Colleagues describe her as an accessible leader whose hands-on approach provides vital guidance for grassroots athletics in Nigeria.
