AFN Reaffirms Commitment to Integrity, Cracks Down on Age Manipulation

Posted : 14 January 2026

The Athletics Federation of Nigeria (AFN) has reaffirmed its commitment to integrity, fairness, and athlete welfare, in line with the World Athletics Rules and the global integrity framework overseen by the Athletics Integrity Unit (AIU).

In a statement, the AFN emphasized that age eligibility requirements are essential for fair competition. “They exist to protect athletes, particularly minors, ensure equal conditions of participation, and safeguard the credibility of results and development pathways,” the statement said. Any falsification or misrepresentation of age constitutes a serious violation that undermines confidence in the sport.

Following a recent AIU inquiry, the AFN applied a robust disciplinary framework to confirmed cases of age manipulation. The framework aligns with AIU principles, emphasizing:

  • Accountability, including responsibility for athletes and support personnel;
  • Deterrence, through enforceable sanctions;
  • Consistency in the application of rules; and
  • Due process, including the presumption of innocence, the right to be heard, and decisions based on credible evidence.

Where age falsification was confirmed, consequences included disqualification from competitions, annulment of results, periods of ineligibility, and sanctions against coaches or other personnel involved, as well as penalties for states with a history of violations. All investigations were conducted independently, and no individual was sanctioned without a fair hearing and a reasoned decision.

In addition to disciplinary actions, the AFN is strengthening preventative and educational initiatives, including enhanced age-verification processes and integrity education for athletes, coaches, and administrators. This includes a new partnership with Roster Athletics, reflecting a shared commitment with World Athletics and the AIU to protect clean athletes and promote trust in the sport.

The AFN concluded by reaffirming its commitment to cooperate with World Athletics, the AIU, and relevant authorities to uphold the highest standards of integrity and governance in athletics.
